What does success mean for you?

Therefore it is important to stop for a while and think about what success means for us.

What is success? the dictionary definitions include:

• The accomplishment of an aim or purpose.
• The achievement of something desired, planned or attempted.
• The attainment of wealth, position or eminence.

There are no right or wrong answers, because it depends on your perspective and context.

Success is measured by the control you assert over the W’s in your life:

• what you do
• when you do it
• where you do it and
• with whom you do it.

Recognising your ability to choose, is the real power you have in determining your success.

What Is Your Definition of Success?

Before we start on our path of self development and achievement of mastery in our profession we need to firstly define what we mean by success, ie what are we aiming for.

Before you can achieve success, you need to define what it means to you. Unless you have a clear vision of what success is to you, you cannot work towards it.

Success means different things to different people. For some, monetary reward is a measure of success. Yet others have multiple definition of success.

There are many aspects of your life that you will need to consider in terms of what is success. You can become very successful in your work and career, but if your family and friends lose out then you wont feel you have achieved success.

To find your own definition of success you need to dig deep within yourself and question your values in life. You can make a conscious choice how to approach your career, and your life. To become more ‘successful’, however you define it.

Some of the definitions refer to achievement of some end state, such as wealth. I believe that you need to enjoy success as the journey not just the goal. It has multiple peaks and not one ultimate pinnacle. One success builds on another. Setbacks and mistake will also help you build success. At different periods of your life, success is defined differently.
